Poetry Slam Poems!

One of the really cool things that we did during the Poetry Slam was to make group poems.

We passed along a sheet of paper which was folded in accordion style. Each person who received the folded paper was instructed to write one awesome line of poetry, fold the sheet of paper to hide what they wrote, and then to pass it along to someone else. So by the time the evening was over we had three poems written by the group.

I want to thank Janee for coming up with this really cool icebreaker to get the crowd in the mood for some poetry!

Here are the three products of our creativity!

Poem One:

How does one find the answer to life?
The sliding sounds of sunset cluster,
echoing the now empty odes of morning's youth,
then the sound waves collided against my ear drums,
Bring your flame solar, she beacons you!

Poem Two:

In the beginning my destiny was known,
but still I did not accept what I had been thrown.
The hole in my soul is empty with desire,
lost in a cloud of emotions in a succulent sunset.
The glow of the rising sun,
reflected over the still clear lake.
Dying to myself to be able to truly give,
hiccuping through quiet breaths.
Engine steam drifts off the beaten path of a tireless dream!

Poem Three:

Seeing the Eiffel tower in dusk light,
brings woe delight in my hearts sight.
She walks in beauty like the night,
of cloudless climes and starry skies.
And all that's jest of dark and bright,
meet in her aspect and and her eyes.
Take me away distant lover,
the sun shines through every crack of life,
and we all dance through the rays of blazing eternity!

Simply beautiful!

Always,
Cheryl

Tie Dye T-Shirt Craziness!

This was my first time ever doing tie dye and I had a lot of fun. We had a number of dyes and I tried a couple of different techniques showed to us by Caitlin Ming. Without her and Janee C., I imagine my shirts would've just been colored with dye (that's it), lacking the most important part - that "tie dye" look. I didn't realize there were so many different ways to get different effects for the outcome of the shirt pattern/design. I feel like they turned out okay for my first time and they will be great shirts for painting in and hanging out in the sun. Next time I will apply less dye and plan out my color schemes from the beginning a little better. Either way, it was a great opportunity to get to know some of our members a little bit better and get artsy on a nice day.

Drawing with Sisa

The drawing workshop given in Friday, June 10 by Sisa Sternback of the AANC (Artists Association of Northern Colorado) was awesome!

We weren't in the classroom but a few minutes before Sisa had us go outside and start working. Before starting though, she did have us do a quick sketch of a simple object - in order to get an idea of our skill levels. (The rock -shown above- was my subject, and you can imagine why the "sketch" of said rock was purposefully omitted from the photograph).

Anyway, here are a few pictures taken during the workshop...

Sisa and Jake Sparks working on the perspective of a curved building.

Jake Swain standing next to his masterpiece!

Jenn Blake with her fabulous peony flower sketch.

The weather was nice for drawing outside and with just 4 of us FRC2 members, it made for very personal attention from our instructor.

Sisa gave us some guidelines and allowed us to explore them with our own style, while working with each of us individually to understand certain drawing techniques while refining our skills.

Just before the end of our session, we went back inside for a critique of our work.
The 4 finished workshop sketches.

Here are a few quick resources and tips Sisa had offered to us:

Drawing Journal
Sisa's drawing journal with collected images, notes and sketches.

Keep a drawing journal! It can be used to collect inspiration, refine skills and develop a recorded history of your drawing progress.

Gesso it!
To get a little extra texture, paint gesso on your drawing paper.

A great book
This book, "How to draw what you see" by Rudy De Reyna, was highly recommended for anyone interested in furthering their drawing skills. After flipping through the book, we could see why....

Open Studio Invitation
A sign-up sheet for those who are interested in participating in the figure drawing studio events.

We've been invited to attend AANC's Open Studio dates. Artists can bring their materials and create art together (with or without AANC membership). Suggested donation to the AANC Scholarship Fund: $3. Initially the studio subjects will be still life arrangements and eventually they will consider bringing in models.

Open Studios are held on Wednesdays between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, unless some other event is being held at the same time. Location: 148 W. Oak, Studio D (near the Taj Mahal restaurant in Old Town). If you have questions please contact the AANC here:
