An Exciting Visit From an Icon

Our year-long “Pursuit of Happiness” speaker series returned from its summer hiatus last Wednesday night at the Denver Art Museum as design legend Charles S. Anderson entertained the crowd with a humorous and colorful take on his career and our industry.

The auditorium – crowded with students and teachers, professional and emerging designers, members and non-members – saw firsthand how Anderson’s extensive collection of licensed artwork has been put to use over several decades. The bright colors and humor of his Pop Ink collection, identity systems, and other works, ranging from posters to packaging, had everyone marveling at the big screen and laughing. And all the while there was a nice dichotomy to the evening as he had us contemplate the state of design today and how we can take action.

AIGA Colorado would like to thank to our sponsors, French Paper – long-time CSA client – and Sprint Printing.  Join us next month for an evening with Alissa Walker, freelance writer and the creative mind behind gelatobaby.com!
And thank you to everyone who attended, we had a packed house! If you were at the event, tag your photos with us on Facebook or Twitter (#aigaco) and we'll choose some to be featured on our site. Don't forget to tag all your posts for future events to be included in our recaps and follow-up conversations.

About Bob MOREHOUSE

Adobe Muse WorkshopA graduate of Yale University, Bob Morehouse came to graphic design by a circuitous route - first working in the film industry, then landscape design, and finally magazine publishing - before founding Vermilion in Boulder, Colorado in 1980. Now a 27-person firm, Vermilion has grown in tandem with the city of Boulder, producing a wide range of work for numerous civic, nonprofit and business organizations across all disciplines - from identity to packaging, to advertising and now increasingly interactive design. Vermilion has worked for many foundations and educational and scientific institutions throughout Colorado, with a particular emphasis on natural foods and environmental projects such as Celestial Seasonings, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Morehouse is active in BoulderÂs nonprofit community, serving on a number of boards - he was recently chair of the Community Foundation board - and providing pro bono services to dozens of nonprofit organizations. He was the recipient of the Pacesetter Award for Business in 2007 and was honored as Business Person of the Year by the Boulder Chamber of Commerce in 2009. Vermilion won a Webby award in 2008 for an interactive project for an event marketing company. He was also awarded the prestigious honor of being awarded an AIGA Fellow in 2007 by the Colorado chapter.

This event is proudly sponsored by Sprint Press.

Aaron Draplin: Tall Tales From A Large Man

Using scientific proof and state-of-the-art multimedia techniques, Aaron James Draplin of the Draplin Design Co. delivers a suckerpunch of a talk that aims to provide bonafide proof of work, the highs and lows of a ferociously independent existence and a couple tall tales from his so-called career in the cutthroat world of contemporary graphic design. Just a regular guy with a trajectory a little dirtier than yours, his talk is open to all oncomers brave enough to show up. If you are a youngster, you may find yourself inspired to attack your design future in a different way. If you are established, you may just leave feeling grateful you don't have anything to do with him. Hard to say. One night only, Denver!

Who is this guy?

Raised in the Michigan Northwoods, schooled at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and currently hunkered down in the mighty Pacific Northwest, the Draplin Design Co. proudly rolls up its sleeves on a number of projects related to the Print, Identity, Web Development, Illustration and Gocco Muscle categories. We make stuff for Coal Headwear, Union Binding Co., Field Notes, Richmond Fontaine, Nike, Wired, Timberline, Ford Motor Co., Viva Voce, Hutchco, Patagonia, Chunklet, Incase, Giro, Cobra Dogs, Burton Snowboards, Hughes Entertainment, Megafaun and even the Obama Administration, if you can believe that. They pride themselves on a high level of craftsmanship and quality that keeps them up late into the wet Portland night.

Join us for this inspiring night - where you can also purchase a uniquely designed, limited edition, three color poster!
