Interviewing Tips
Five tips for interview success
Show your best work The iPad is the best thing to happen to creative portfolios for a long time, but if you haven’t got one, these rules still apply: make sure you have a dozen good projects, but always have the strongest three or four in your mind so that you can confidently talk through them if time is short. |
|
Don’t wait for vacancies If your experience and skillset will help a studio or agency win business, improve its offering or bring an innovative approach to the table, then it will try to make a space for you. Added value cannot be underestimated. Creative agencies are busy places, so if your details hit the right screen at the right time, you could make someone’s life easier. |
|
Never stop learning One of the advantages of working within the creative industry is that we are at the bleeding edge of innovation. There are lots of really good sites that can keep you up to date with what’s new and what’s yet to be new, all providing as much or as little info as you require. |
|
Dress the part How you present yourself is very important. A good rule of thumb is to dress smart-casual. Wear clothes you are comfortable in: this will also help portray your confidence. If you’re meeting a creative, don’t wear a suit because they won’t be. But turning up in shorts and flip-flops for client-side interviews will speed your exit out the door. |
|
Have the right skills Studios are always looking for people who can add something new to their business, but not at the expense of what they want you to do. So don’t blurt out your skills with, say, augmented reality apps, before you have given them confidence in your ability to do the job. Instead, see these skills as a good way to add value to the business in future. |

Pinhole Photography Workshop
Course Description:
This is pretty simple. You make a camera out of a box, use the box to make images on light sensitive paper, develop the paper, and you have a pinhole photograph that's all yours.
The objective is to learn to keep it simple; starting with your vision, the image capture and especially the processing and the printing of the image. We will explore ways to simplify these steps so that our primary focus can be on the creation of the image.

If you started your creative business on your own, you may not have considered the types of insurance you should carry. We all love to design our own logo, business card and website, but sometimes it is hard to stop and think about how the business should be set up. The fact is, having a professional set up, including liability, property and possibly errors/omissions insurance is key to ensuring a successful and
less stressful existence as a small business owner. Understanding the types of insurance you should carry and the costs associated with not having them is just as important as working on marketing for your business. Without marketing, your business can't grow. But without insurance, your business could not BE.
Come to the April Buzz and take advantage of some free advice from a veteran in the industry. Brad Hughes of State Farm insurance will walk us through the meanings and costs of insurance for small businesses. We'll also compare notes on health insurance options for small businesses. Join the conversation at the Facebook event page. We will be meeting at our old Grindhaus location (now called Tree Haus).
