Job Opportunity

There is a great job opportunity working through a graphic design placement firm in Denver for porting online courses. It is kind of like editing Desire 2 Learn content, but different systems. The job is in Centennial, but most contractors work at home. They have a ton of work for the next month or two, and are recruiting more people.

AIGA

An image from the AIGA Colorado website

For the FRC2 members whose focus is on Graphic Design, you probably already are (or may want to be) aware of what AIGA is.

In their own words:  "Founded as the American Institute of Graphic Arts in 1914 as a small, exclusive club, AIGA now represents more than 22,000 designers through national activities and local programs developed by 62 chapters and 240 student groups."

This organization can be very helpful to you as a student designer, a professional or even just someone who appreciates the graphic arts.

As a member of AIGA here is what you receive:
  • Inspiration (Design archives, access to design portfolios and member profiles, interviews, essays, and even videos of award-winning members.)
  • Discounts (use Lynda.com? Take 20% off with your AIGA membership. Also, receive discounts on FedEx services, Blurb.com, Adobe, Shutterstock, Apple and more. Check out the list of benefits HERE.)
  • Networking opportunities (With design events going on all the time, you have a chance to connect with other like-minded designers, mentors and potential clients or even possible employers.)
  • Cool events (AIGA events are being held across the US and online all the time! You can find lectures by design leaders and innovative business owners, brainstorming sessions, workshops and more.)
  • Competitions (Get your name out there with opportunities to enter AIGA design competitions geared toward students or professionals.)

Find out more about AIGA by visiting their website HERE. Or the local Colorado chapter HERE.

Did you know, there's an AIGA group at CSU? The graphic design students at CSU have come together to form a student group called: AIGA SID "Students In Design". The AIGA SID group has regular meetings and workshops, speakers, events, competitions and often carpools to Denver AIGA events together.

AIGA SID has invited our group (FRC2) and any FRCC students interested, to join them at any of their events - anytime.

To follow them on Twitter, click HERE.
To learn more about the AIGA SID group, contact the Department of Arts at CSU at: 970-491-6774

Lane Leazer

SKILLS & INTERESTS
Relative Skills: This is my fourth semester working with the Adobe CS5 suite and feel like I got a pretty good grip on Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, and some Dreamweaver. I have also been producing and mixing audio since I was a young so I have quite a bit of experience with audio editing, mastering, and recording. Programs like Acid Pro, Reason, Pro tools, Sonar, Cakewalk, Ableton, Fruity loops, etc. Music is what got me into video so they both have a huge role in my life. I play the drums, bass, and turntables.

I really enjoy using markers, pens, paint markers, India ink, spray paint, Prisma markers/colored pencils, or anything like these mediums. INK & PAINT! I am also a big fan of photography and videography (knowledge in digital), both viewing and creating. I have worked with Lightroom 3 a bit as well. I have a Nikon D50 for photo and a Cannon Optura Xi with wide angle, filters, and directional mic for video. So if there are any audio/video production students, I am your guy.

I am also familiar with a handful of video editing and post production video software programs like Final Cut, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid technologies, Adobe After Effects, and Vegas Pro. I am a freelance lighting technician and camera operator for CPT12 (channel 12, Denver’s PBS), so I have quite a bit of in studio and out in field experience for filming and lighting.

All in all - I eat, sleep, and breathe art, music, and film or at least the means to make it, enjoy it, and/or obtain it in its many forms!

Toolbox Creative presentation!

We have some new professional BFFs.

Dawn from Toolbox Creative.
An amazing guest!

She was full of advice about clients, jobs, billing, creativity, and most of all, THINKING!
For those of you who missed the meeting, we'll give you her top tips:

1. Network! The most important part of making a name for yourself (as a designer, a web designer, an artist, a knitter...whatever!) is networking! Dawn was very adamant about the benefits of joining LinkedIn. A group called RefreshNoCo is the online version of the now inactive network of Northern Colorado creatives. So join LinkedIn and join that group, as well as adding Dawn Putney (just mention how she might know you).

2. Think! Dawn really stressed something that a lot of us forget sometimes...think about your design! Force yourself to sketch out ideas and brainstorm BEFORE you jump on the computer. Well thought out designs are the best designs.

3. Portfolio! Dawn's biggest concern with portfolios was thoughtfulness, of course! She said that 8 is a good number of pieces as long as they're all good...and more too, as long as they are ALL good. She has graciously offered to do portfolio reviews with us, but if you want to set an informational meeting with them, give them a call. Contact info can be found on their website.

There were of course many more highlights, but not enough space for them here! If you're interested in more details about the meeting, contact Caitlin at cming88@gmail.com.

Dawn has also shown great enthusiasm about our group, and has offered us a tour of their studio as well as future support!

Logo Contest Begins....

Please vote on poll according to the logo number that you like!

Poll is located on the left side of blog. Voting ends May 20th. Good luck to all the 13 designs!

Description of logo intent:
"The logo itself as it is, is not complete. The idea is to have each member (whomever participates) create one of the "squares" for the image. Behind (or in front) of it all is the "eye" shape. It could be done in a group session or whatever. Pen & ink or whatever. Colors or not. Just basically a group thing."

BIO
I started my art career later in my life, as my love for fantasy. I used to take a more serious view of life, therefore all that I read, had a reality base to it. I now embrace the magic in life and want to share that view with others, through my art and the written word through children's books.

I also create calendars, with the same theme. I love and have studied mythology, astrology, psychology, and metaphysics.

I use Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and watercolor as my medium.

SKILLS

My talents:  Well, I'm a photographer, I would say this is first and foremost and that I'm interested in the formal aspect as well as the manipulative.  As far as Adobe programs go I'm best at Photoshop, and Illustrator would be second.  I've have some knowledge in InDesign, and even less as far as Dreamweaver and Flash go.  In the past I have dabbled in painting (water color, oil and acrylic) but its been a very long time.  I used to be able to draw (again its been a long time since I sat down and drew anything)  In the past I have done a lot of pen and ink work which included mostly pointillism.  I have designed greeting cards and sold those designs to several greeting card companies.  I have a line of two dimensional wooden angel figurines that I bring to fruition by designing/drawing, cutting out on a scroll saw, hand sanding, painting and then put together much like a puzzle which are mounted on a wood base.  I've sold these through galleries and word of mouth.  I have also designed stained glass windows and have also made a few myself.  I've done many craft applications including: jewelry, crochet, embellished glass Christmas ornaments, needlework, beading.

Some of the things I would like to investigate are: designs for fabrics, shoes & hand bags, dinnerware, and oriental rugs.

To travel abroad with my camera is my number one dream after I become a proficient, successful photographer, well even if I never become proficient or successful.  I would start in Italy and see it all!

I love music, old architecture, travel, skiing, and exploring creative/artistic directions of almost all types.

Jerry Sullivan's Photo Workshop

Jerry Sullivan's photo workshop was awesome!
Jerry was very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful in his workshop, and we're all itching for him to come back and teach us more. The majority of the workshop covered the bare basics of film speed, shutter speed, and aperture.

As Jerry says, don't just shoot with luck, shoot with knowledge! He gave a homework assignment to help us fully understand shutter speed and aperture and how they work together.

If you missed the meeting and are interested in the topics covered or the homework assignment,
contact Caitlin Ming at cming88@gmail.com.

Jerry was very gracious to give us his phone number and email if anyone would like to learn more about photography basics, he would be more than happy to help.

Here is his information:
Phone number: 970-568-6910
Email: sully204@yahoo.com

If you email him, just make sure to put "Photo Workshop" or something similar in the subject line.

Simple exercise to demonstrate how our camera interprets 18% gray.

We look forward to having Jerry come back this summer for another workshop. It will be an outdoor photography workshop! Look for details soon!
